Choosing the music for the first dance at your wedding can seem a daunting task, but there are plenty of brilliant options available to you. With a little help and guidance, you are sure to find the perfect song for your dance, which will set the tone for your reception and the rest of your day.  You may as a couple have a song which is special to you, if so great, if not – don’t panic!

The best place to start is by deciding on the genre of music you wish to dance to. It could be pop, rock, country, or jazz, choose a genre that resonates with you as a couple. It’s crucial to select a genre that symbolises you as a couple and makes you feel comfortable and happy.

Often, the lyrics of a song can be just as significant as the melody. It is best to consider a song with lyrics that are meaningful to you as a couple. It could be a love song, a song that speaks of your shared interests and common goals or a song that tells a story of your relationship.

When selecting your first dance song, one thing you need to consider is the tempo of the music. You don’t want a song that’s too fast and leaves you feeling exhausted or a song so slow for your dance style that you can’t wait for the end to come! A good piece of advice is to choose a song with a tempo that allows you to dance comfortably and confidently. Slow songs are very common, but don’t be afraid to choose a more upbeat version if it speaks to you!

Next, you need to consider your dance style and the type of dance you want to perform. It could be a slow dance, a waltz, or a more modern concept of a choreographed routine. Choose a song that fits your dance style and complements your moves. As part of this, also consider your venue. If your venue has a small dance floor, for example, an elaborate choreographed dance routine is unlikely to be possible.

Ultimately, the best first dance song is one that makes you and your partner feel connected but more importantly comfortable performing it in front of your guests. Choose a song that speaks to your heart and makes you both feel happy and in love. Don’t be afraid to go with your gut feeling and remember that there is no right or wrong song.
