Confetti is so synonymous with the romance of weddings- it is a moment that you will not find happening on any other occasion. The throwing of confetti has been a tradition that has been around for hundreds of years. Historically in the UK, it was customary to throw rice over the newlyweds as it was a symbol of fertility. This was then followed by the use of plastic and paper confetti.

In recent years with the focus being on reducing environmental harm, there has been a shift to the use of natural biodegradable forms of confetti. Despite this, some venues, particularly historic venues, disallow the use of confetti, so couples should always check if it is allowed and plan for alternatives if desired.

Some alternatives to consider for this quintessential part of your celebrations are:

Natural Petal Confetti which floats well and provides a pretty effect for wedding photos. Just be mindful that dyed petals can lose their colour when they get wet and stain your wedding dress.

Lavender Confetti is a lovely idea for a heavenly-scented first walk as Mrs & Mrs. It is 100% natural, biodegradable, and very pretty. If you have a rustic theme or your colour scheme features lilac, this one is particularly for you.

Leaf Clippings make a unique and low-cost confetti alternative. Pick up a pretty punch from a local craft shop and create your own homemade confetti by simply punching shapes out of foraged leaves.

Ribbon Wands make for a captivating photo opportunity where venues don't allow the throwing of confetti. These are easily made and guests can take them home as a nice memento of the day. Ribbons made from recycled materials will keep them eco-friendly, and the wands are reusable so can be used for your ceremony, entrance to your reception, your first dance, or your departure at the end of the evening.

Bubble confetti is really popular nowadays and there are many suppliers out there who offer bottles of bubbles for weddings. Alternatively, you could look at hiring a bubble machine to spray a spectacular stream of bubbles above the wedding party

Tinkling Bells- a sweet-sounding and rather elegant alternative to traditional confetti is to use tinkling bells. String a half dozen small tinkling bells along the length of a piece of ribbon and place them on a DIY display or on the seats ahead of your ceremony.

Your confetti exit from your ceremony should be an enjoyable moment since the pre-wedding nerves will have settled. This is the time to take in your surroundings and your guests rather than looking down or directly at the photographer. Scan around, look at each other, and take in the moment! Perhaps stop and have a kiss halfway down the line. Try not to walk too fast either, if you race down the line, your guests might miss you!
